"Horizon Airways was founded in Mackay in 1994 by Trish Mahlberg with one Piper Warrior. After catching the flying bug, Trish gave up her career as an industrial chemist in 1988 to become a flying instructor. As the Chief Instructor and Chief Pilot, Trish looks after the Mackay base. Assisted by partner Peter Ware, an ex RAAF pilot who spent eight years with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
 

Horizon was invited to Townsville in 1997, and also has operations in Rockhampton and Mount Isa. The company now has seven instructors and operates nine aircraft.
